Founder and previous owner of Wynn Resorts, Steve Wynn, no longer features on the casino license. The ruling was made by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) after it found that Wynn is not a qualifier and holds no bearing on the future of the company.
The statement from the MGC read: “there is substantial evidence that the relationship between Mr Wynn and Wynn Resorts has been terminated in a meaningful way such that Mr Wynn no longer falls with the definition of the qualifier at the conclusion of the upcoming annual shareholders meeting.”
Last month, the casino and hotel resort stripped Wynn’s name from its Boston Harbor project. In fact, the hotel that is scheduled for launch in June 2019 is now known as Encore Boston Harbor.
Wynn Resorts without Steve Wynn
But what is Wynn Resorts without the name Wynn? Well according to a poll, 60% of gamblers and guests hadn’t heard of the name Steve Wynn. In addition, 40% did know him and were privy to the sexual misconduct allegations. However, 90% out of the 40% that knew Steve Wynn, said they love the property, the service and the food. The 90% added, “we don’t care who’s running it.”
CEO of Wynn Resorts, Matt Maddox was a man on a mission to prove that Wynn is not a man, but rather it is a brand. In his statement to the MGC, Maddox said Wynn Resorts “is not about a man. It hasn’t been about a man for 18 years. Steve Wynn is not Wynn Resorts.”
Maddox along with the rest of the company was pleased to know that the MGC’s conclusion was in favour of removing Steve Wynn from the casino operating permit.
While Wynn Resorts have won this battle, they remain under investigation by the MGC. The investigation will determine the extent to which company executives were privy to the allegations brought against previous CEO Steve Wynn.
